Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate
Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate is one of the commonest birth defects (occurs with a frequency of 1 in 600 newborn babies) and involves non-union of the lip on one or both sides or non-union of the palate. Dr. Satya Saraswat (MBBS, MS, MCh, FISHRS, DNB (Gold Medalist) has been accredited by Smile Train (the world’s biggest cleft charity organization) to perform free-of-cost cleft lip and cleft palate surgery in India & its secondary deformities. What is a Cleft Lip?
A cleft lip is a condition of separation of the upper lip and can occur on both sides of the lip.
What is a Cleft Palate?
A cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth that occurs due to the tissue not joining together during fetal development.
Timeline for the Treatment
- Cleft lip surgery should be done at the age of 3 months.
- Cleft palate surgery should be done at the age of 9-12 months.
What do Cleft Surgeries Fix?
Cleft lip and cleft palate surgery improves the function of a child’s mouth and lips and also gives a new appearance to the face. Both these conditions are related to health issues like dental problems, hearing problems, or speech difficulties.
Therefore, the procedure improves a child’s ability to:
- Eat food and drink liquids.
- Breathe easily.
- Listen functionally.
- Speak clearly.
Causes of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate
The causes of cleft deformities are complex and include a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Even though the cause cannot be identified, studies have indicated that several factors are responsible for this condition:
- Genetics: A family history of cleft lip or palate will increase the risk of such conditions. Having a brother or sister, or even a parent, with a cleft will raise the risk of future offspring.
- Environmental Factors: When the mother is exposed to certain substances during pregnancy, such as tobacco, alcohol, or any medication, it may raise the risk.
- Syndromes: In certain instances, cleft lip and palate can be associated with a genetic syndrome, such as Pierre Robin sequence or Treacher Collins syndrome, that can include other congenital anomalies.
- Ethnicity: There are certain ethnic groups, such as Asians, Native Americans, and Hispanics, who have a higher prevalence of clefts than others.
